Strolling through the monument- filled streets of
jerez is a divine pleasure, especially when the traveller
finds in this city a leisure and cultural offering
that few places can make. In late February flamenco
and Spanish dance are combined, while in April during
the Holy week, which is of National Tourist Interest,
the brotherhoods march through the impressive historic
city centre to the sound of saetas with the fragrance
or orange blossoms wafting over the entire city. Jerez
is better known though for its Horse Fair, where it
is a strange sensation to see how during the fiesta
its more than two hundred perfectly decorated booths
are transformed into a city. During the Fair equestrian
activities such as working with cattle on horseback,
animal judging, carriage exhibitions, a raid and a
contest of chase and pulling down of cattle. Aside
from all these spectacles, you can witness the magnificent
Gala Exhibition of the Royal Equestrian Arts School
of Andalusia or the Yeguada of Cartuja-Hierro del
Bocado.
Motorcyclists from all over Spain drive down every
year to Jerez to see the most emblematic test of the
world motorcycle championship. It is three exciting
days with the emotions at a fever pitch when the competitors
rev their motors in this thrilling circuit. You can
advise to make a reservation ahead of time in order
to enjoy the races and all the sideline acts that
are organised. Try to arrive on a Friday to enjoy
a night of flamenco in one of the fan clubs in the
city. Different styles including toná, siguirilla,
saeta, soleá and bulería will be ringing
in your ears as much as the roar of the motorcycles.
